It is likely created as part Benton's ‘Earth’ or ‘Evolution’ series. The dark gold abstract wave like shape sits across black and red and under a perfect white circle. As can be seen here his work was often influenced by Eastern art as well as artists like Mark Rothko. Benton was also well known for his design of political posters, and his career as an artist spanned many decades.
